Bonjour,

This series of original drawings and paintings, titled "PIERROT" focus on the iconic French character rooted in the commedia dell’arte (Italian comedy). With his gentle melancholy, he has left an indelible mark on me since a young age.

PIERROT MOUCHARABIEH I

By incorporating the moucharabieh - the traditional latticework found on traditional Tunisian homes to offer privacy while still allowing light and air to flow through - I’m merging elements of my French and Tunisian roots, creating a connection between Pierrot’s image and a cultural symbol that is part of my own story. The moucharabieh represents more than just a beautiful architectural feature; it speaks to the balance between concealment and exposure. It is used here as a metaphorical screen. It becomes a filter between inner emotions and outer expression, between openness and reserve. This golden moucharabieh is both a barrier and an illuminator. Extending the grid onto the mat board further blurs the line between the artwork’s internal world and the external, as though the emotional boundaries cannot be confined within the portrait itself. What does it mean to be both seen and hidden, and how does this tension reflect in your own life?

In PIERROT MOUCHARABIEH I, Pierrot gazes calmly to the side, framed against a pink and gold background. The pattern creates a sense of separation and entrapment, as though Pierrot is being observed through a screen, adding to the mystery of the piece. The grid fragments his image, symbolizing the fragility and solitude that define his character.

This piece invites personal reflection on themes of identity and boundaries. How do the barriers and screens we create—both physically and emotionally—shape our sense of self and connection to others?
